Blackwoods and Seawall Campgrounds

Blackwoods is the name of one of two campgrounds in Acadia National Park. The other campground is Seawall. Blackwoods Campground is the larger of the two campgrounds with 290 campsites and is open year round. Most of the campsites are by reservation, There are some first-come-first-served campsites at Seawall, which has a total of 250 campsites, and, if Blackwwods is not full, campsites may be available there for people looking for a site. There are a number of private campgrounds on or near Mount Desert Island.

Campsites may be reserved by calling 1-877-444-6777 or internationally at 518-885-3639 as of 2013.

The photograph above shows the check-in station at Blackwoods. Newly arrived campers can check in from their vehicles at the window on the right side of this building, Thereafter, campers and visitors can drive to the left of the building to gain access to the campsites. A similar process is used at Seawall. Camping fees at Blackwoods are $20 per night per site May through October, $10 in April or November and free December to March in 2013. December to March camping is primitive and campers must check-in at park headquarters. Recreational Vehicles (RVs) are allowed but there are no hook ups. Private campgrounds in the area do provide hook ups. Sewall Campground fees are $20 per night per site for sites with vehicle parking in 2013. Walk-in tent sites are $10 per night per site in 2013. Seawall is open May through September only. Call the reservation number for special rates and provisions if you are disabled, a senior citizen or have a party greater than six.

The photograph below shows the road system to gain access to the campsites at Blackwoods. A map of the campsites is provided at check-in at both of the campgrounds and visitors can obtain a map at the check-in station. It is best to locate your campsite on the map and ensure you understand the road system before driving aimlessly around the area. Visitors are not allowed in the campsite after 10:00 PM or before 8:00 AM.

The following photograph shows a typical campsite at the Seawall Campground. The sites at Blackwoods Campground are similar. The individual campsites have room for two tents and one vehicle but are limited to six people. The National Park Service provides a picnic table and fireplace as shown in the picture. The firewood must be supplied by the camper or purchased from vendors nearby. Collecting firewood in the park is not allowed. In addition to the individual campsites, there are group campsites. Contact the reservation office at the number above concerning the availability of these large campsites or alternatives if you have a party larger than six persons.

The next picture shows the amphitheater at Seawall Campground. Both campgrounds have amphitheaters that may be used for nature lectures or demonstrations and religious services. Each amphitheater has additional parking spaces for visitors and both have access paths for people with disabilities.

Blackwoods is located in the Otter Creek section of the Town of Mount Desert. Follow State Route 3 through the Town of Bar Harbor and through Otter Creek. The access road for Blackwoods is on the left just beyond Otter Creek. The Seawall Campground is located in the Seawall section of the National Park near the Village of Bass Harbor off State Route 102a.
