Dorr Mountain

Dorr Mountain

Dorr Mountain rises to 1,270 feet (387 meters) above sea level west of The Tarn in Bar Harbor. It is the second highest mountain in the Mount Desert Range. The photograph above shows Dorr Mountain to the left as seen from the Kebo Valley Golf Course to the north of Dorr Mountain. A part of Cadillac Mountain can be seen in the center of the photograph. Kebo Mountain at 407 feet (125 meters) above sea level is behind the trees to the right. One would need to be an avid golfer not to be distracted by the scenery around this 18-hole golf course. Dorr Mountain was called Flying Squadron Mountain at one time and that name may appear on old maps and documents. The next photograph shows the eastern face of Dorr Mountain from The Tarn.

The following photograph shows more of Dorr Mountain from State Route 3 in Bar Harbor south of The Tarn.

North End of Dorr Mountain from Route 3

There are several hiking trails to the summit of Dorr Mountain. One trailhead is on the Park Loop Road about a mile from the point at which the road becomes one-way. That trail climbs up and down Kebo Mountain before ascending Dorr Mountain. Other trailheads are at The Tarn and Sieur de Monts Spring at the Wild Gardens of Acadia on State Route 3 in Bar Harbor. There is a deep gorge between Dorr Mountain and Cadillac Mountain through which trails run from Dorr Mountain to Cadillac Mountain and north/south between these two mountains. There are some rugged parts of these trails. People have died from falls on Dorr Mountain. Exercise caution when hiking in this area.
