Parkman Mountain Area

Parkman Mountain

Parkman Mountain is one of several peaks that rise above Upper Hadlock Pond in the Town of Mount Desert. The mountain in the center of the photograph above and in the close-up photograph below is Bald Peak at 974 feet (297 meters) above sea level. The peak barely visible to the left of Bald Peak in the photograph above is Parkman Mountain at 941 feet (287 meters) above sea level. The peak to the right of Bald Peak in the photograph above is Gilmore Mountain at 1,036 feet (316 meters) above sea level. Gilmore peak is the highest of the three mountains. Although Parkman Mountain is the lowest of the peaks in this area, its name is used to refer to all the peaks close by. Sargent Mountain South Ridge Trail is to the extreme right in both pictures. Cedar Swamp Mountain summit also rises to the east of Upper Hadlock Pond but to the right of the area shown in the photograph above. The Sargent Mountain South Ridge trail runs down from Cedar Swamp Mountain as shown in the photographs past and behind Gilmore Peak and up Sargent Mountain the summit of which is behind the peaks in the photographs..

This area is popular with tourists because one can visit three mountain peaks in a short period of time and the trails are not difficult.

Bald Peak

The photograph below taken from the summit of Cedar Swamp Mountain shows Bald Peak in the center and Gilmore Peak to the right behind Bald Peak.

Bald Peak and Gilmore Peak

The next photograph also taken from the summit of Cedar Swamp Mountain shows the Bald Peak summit marker in the center of the photograph (look for a mound with a cross on it) and the Gilmore Peak summit marker to the right framed by trees. This photograph illustrates the fact that these summits are very close to one another.

The Parkman Mountain parking area is on State Route 3/198 about halfway between the intersection with State Route 233 and the Village of Northeast Harbor. Most trails in this area begin near this parking area. North of this parking area is Giant Slide Road where another trail. giant Slide Trail, follows a rock slide to the summit of Bald Peak. This latter trail is longer than the trails to the summits from the Parkman Mountain parking area.
