Porcupine Islands

Porcupine Islands

The Porcupine Islands are a series of islands in Frenchman Bay off the coast of the Town of Bar Harbor. The photograph above was taken from Cadillac Mountain. It shows Frenchman Bay and the Town of Bar Harbor in the foreground. The islands in the central area of the photograph are, from left to right, Bar Island, Sheep Porcupine Island, Burnt Porcupine Island, Long Porcupine Island and Bald Porcupine Island. Behind Burnt Porcupine Island is Stave Island. Jordan Island is behind and to the right of Long Porcupine Island. Ironbound Island is in the rear to the far right.

Bald Porcupine Island

The island shown in the photograph above is Bald Porcupine Island. A breakwater was constructed from the western tip of this island, the extreme right of the island in this photograph, to Cromwell Harbor in the Town of Bar Harbor. The beginning of this breakwater can be seen at the tip of the island in the photograph. Breakwaters help protect harbors from erosion by high waves. The next photograph shows an exposed part of this breakwater.

The following photograph shows Bald Porcupine Island and the breakwater as seen in a telephoto shot from Cadillac Mountain. The lens was set at 200mm on a digital camera.

The next photograph shows, from left to right, Sheep Porcupine Island, Burnt Porcupine Island and Long Porcupine Island. All these islands are a part of Acadia National Park except for Burnt Porcupine Island.

Sheep, Burnt and Long Porcupine Islands

The following photograph shows ocean kayakers passing Burnt Porcupine Island and Long Porcupine Island. The Porcupine Islands are not the only islands in Frenchman Bay. Bar Island is closer to the Town of Bar Harbor. Among the other islands in Frenchman Bay are Stave Island, Jordan Island and Ironbound Island all of which are larger than the Porcupine Islands and Bar Island but not a part of Acadia National Park.

Folks who do not enjoy the physical challenge of paddling an ocean kayak in Frenchman Bay can take a tour of the bay on more substantial craft like the schooner Margaret Todd shown in the next photograph.

The only means of visiting the Porcupine Islands is by boat. There are no regularly scheduled visits to these islands but the cruise ships working out of Bar Harbor provide close views of the Porcupine Islands.
