Thompson Island

Thompson Island Visitors Center

Thompson Island is north of Mount Desert Island and south of  the mainland. This island is a part of Acadia National Park and is often a visitor's first introduction to the park. State Route 3 from Ellsworth runs across Thompson Island to Mount Desert Island. A Visitors Center, shown in the photograph above, is located on the island west of the highway. Most of the island on the east side is dedicated to a large picnic area. The photograph below shows some of the picnic tables and fire pits. The body of water seen in this photograph is Mount Desert Narrows.

The next photograph shows a marsh south of Thompson Island. This marsh supports a wide variety of wildlife. At the time this photograph was taken, a Great Blue Heron was hunting in this marsh. Thompson Island has restroom facilities but the water is not potable. Picnickers must bring their own potable water and firewood.

Thompson Island is on State Route 3 just north of Mount Desert Island. There is ample parking at the Visitors Center and the picnic area.
